Rain on your wedding day; Here is what really happens

When you picture your wedding day, chances are you’re imagining sunshine and blue skies. But sometimes Mother Nature has other plans—and believe it or not, a little rain doesn’t have to ruin a thing.

As a wedding photographer, I’ve photographed rainy wedding days that turned out to be some of the most beautiful, emotional, and memorable celebrations. The key is being flexible and embracing the unexpected.

Have a Rain Plan

One of the first things I recommend is asking your venue about their rainy day plan. Most venues have a backup ceremony location or a covered area ready to go if the weather doesn’t cooperate. Knowing those options ahead of time helps eliminate stress if the forecast changes.

The same goes for portraits! We can often use covered porches, elegant indoor spaces, greenhouses, barns, or other sheltered locations that still provide gorgeous images.

Pack the right things

A few simple items can make all the difference:

  • Clear umbrellas (they photograph beautifully!)
  • White towels to lay under your dress on wet ground
  • Water proof mascara and extra make-up
  • A positive attitude

You’d be surprised how many incredible photos come from dancing in the rain, sharing an umbrella, or sneaking outside for a few dramatic portraits after the storm passes.

Embrace the story

Some of my favorite wedding memories have happened because of the rain—not in spite of it.

One venue owner collected rainwater that fell during the ceremony in a small mason jar and gifted it to the couple as a keepsake from their wedding day. It was such a thoughtful reminder that even unexpected moments can become treasured memories.

Rain often slows the day down in the best way. Couples spend a little more time together, guests gather a little closer, and the entire celebration feels cozy and intimate.

Trust your vendors

Your vendor team has likely navigated rainy wedding days before. We’ll adjust timelines, find beautiful portrait locations, keep everyone dry when possible, and make sure your day still feels magical.

At the end of the day, guests may remember the rain, but they will look back and remember the love, the laughter, the happy tears, the celebration DESPITE the rain.

Whether your wedding day is filled with sunshine or showers, remember God's blessings are not measured by the weather.
